Church registers list

  1. What's available

    This list holds indexes and links to registers and copy registers of over 1500 churches and chapels held by us for Lancashire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside, plus some bordering Derbyshire and Yorkshire areas.

    Registers not listed may still be at the church, or at another archives service.

  2. How to access

    A link to the resource will be provided if it's available online.

    Physical copies of registers are held at Central Library. In the church register, you will be given references telling you where the resource can be found.

    • registers on microfilm (marked MFPR) are available on the ground floor in cabinets 1-7, ask a member of staff to direct you
    • transcripts (marked with LPRS.Transcript) can be viewed in the search room, please make an appointment
    • more recent registers (marked Archives) are available in the search room. To view original registers, please make an appointment. No original registers will be produced where surrogates are available.
    • for registers with a numerical reference and no prefix (e.g. 987.6543), you can request access by emailing archiveslocalstudies@manchester.gov.uk.
