Manchester City Council

Business & investment Our commitment to Social Value in spending

Video and transcript of Cllr Ollerhead

Cllr Carl Ollerhead, Executive Member for Finance and Human Resources, talks about Social Value, and what it means for the city:

In Manchester, we spend billions of pounds of your money making sure that the city works.

So if businesses want to work for the council, they have to work for you and our city too, helping our hardest-hit communities as a condition of doing business.

We call this social value – a way of meeting everyone’s needs in the community.

But it isn’t just about money – it’s a simple idea that makes a big difference.

Last year, our social value approach helped get 158,000 volunteer hours across the city, helping communities just like yours.

Ten years ago, only half of what we spent was with local suppliers. That’s now nearly three-quarters of what we spend.

It’s an extra 1300 jobs, or 665 apprenticeships.

It’s about making the money we spend make a bigger difference for you and the city.
