Schools, education and childcare The Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE)

The role of SACRE is to support and give the local authority advice on matters that are related to collective worship and religious education in community schools.

Manchester SACRE is a statutory body, made up of people from a wide range of faith groups who volunteer to be members, but it is not part of the local authority. The SACRE can ask for a review of the locally agreed Religious Education syllabus and will also consider requests from schools that want to stop providing an act of worship (broadly Christian in nature) to some, or all of the children in the school.

The new Manchester Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education 2022-2027 is a collaboration between Manchester City Council and five other Greater Manchester authorities. Our partners are Tameside, Trafford, Stockport, Salford and colleagues from RE Today. It is the syllabus to be used by all community schools and is recommended for Church schools, academies and free schools. The full syllabus has been distributed to all Manchester schools for use from September 2022.

Any schools requiring the full version of the new syllabus to be re-sent should contact Nick Paul (nicholas.paul@manchester.gov.uk)

The full syllabus is subject to a licensing agreement restricting its use to Manchester Schools, however the abridged version is available to interested parties upon request by contacting Nick Paul (nicholas.paul@manchester.gov.uk)
