The proposal
We are proposing to close Buglawton Hall School in Congleton, Cheshire. This a local authority residential special school for boys with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties from Year 5 to Year 11.
Why we’re proposing to close the school
The number of children who attend the school has fallen from 41 to 14 pupils since 2008 (three of the pupils are from other local authorities), while the demand has gone up for day placements within the city.
What we’ll do instead
It costs us around £1.6m to run the school each year. We want to reinvest the funding into new educational provision for children with SEMH.
We plan to:
- develop a greater range of specialist provision; some in mainstream schools
- create more day special school places in the city
We also want to bring partners on-board and work closely with them to increase early intervention and social care support.
We will work with parents of children currently attending the school to make sure their needs are met.
