We’re consulting on a new document setting out our approach to developing Manchester’s central business and education district, known as Corridor Manchester, stretching south from the city centre along Oxford Road.
We’re looking for your comments on the document and how it might affect you.
We already have a wider vision for this area – the Corridor Strategic Vision to 2025.
Our new document suggests objectives and themes to support this vision and make it happen.

Summary and background
The new document shows the many partner institutions and organisations with property and interests in the Corridor Manchester area. It outlines any plans these partners already have for development.
The Corridor Strategic Vision to 2025 highlighted the need to support plans and future potential for these partners to grow their expertise in research, innovation, making a commercial success of their work, academic excellence, skills, and facilities to encourage and develop more new talent, ideas and technology.
It also highlights the need to support private companies promising high growth and ‘added value’ – particular strengths of Corridor Manchester partners.
The new Corridor Strategic Spatial Framework also identifies some highly significant features of the area – ‘anchor destinations’ – and how investment in them will boost,or has already boosted, the success of the whole Corridor:
- The Whitworth where a £15million development has transformed the art gallery, doubling its size and creating new spaces that embrace the park at the heart of the Corridor, creating a significant cultural attraction.
- Contact Theatre, at the south end of the Corridor, is investing to upgrade both its building and its pioneering work and research linking the arts, health and social care.
- New opportunities are developing at the north of the area including Manchester Metropolitan University (Manchester Met) Arts and Culture Centre, University of Manchester’s Alliance Manchester Business School and the Precinct Shopping Centre. Alongside the Royal Northern College of Music and other big investments at Manchester Met this really raises the standard and potential at this end of the Corridor.
With carefully managed and appropriate shopping development opportunities emerging from the distinctive activities thriving in the Corridor, these primary landmarks and further spin-offs that could follow are building up the critical mass of an area with vast potential to become the primary business and education centre for the whole of Greater Manchester’.
