Consultations and surveys A6 Stockport Road consultation

This consultation closed on Friday 7 June 2019

We have developed a proposed plan of work to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow on the A6 Stockport Road, particularly between Mitre Road and St John’s Road.

Benefits of the proposed work:

  • Improved travel time for motorists, cyclists and bus users, especially during morning, afternoon and evening traffic peaks
  • Improved access to local residential areas and local businesses
  • Improved safety for cyclists and pedestrians
  • Improved access to Longsight Library and Longsight Health Centre.

What we are proposing

Congestion reduction

Widening of the A6 Stockport Road northbound between Mitre Road and St John’s Road so that another lane can be added. This will also give more room to people turning right onto Kirkmanshulme Lane to the inner relief road. Existing ‘No Waiting At Any Time’ and ‘No Loading’ signs will be repositioned on the new kerb.

Relocation of the existing crossing

This will be moved closer to Mitre Road, where it will be easier to see traffic, and in the direct path of people coming from the main district centre, Asda or Mitre Road who want to cross to the bus stops.

Segregated cycle track

A segregated cycle track between Mitre Road and St John’s Road that will be physically separated from other vehicles to give a clear and convenient route for cyclists and will improve safety.

Relocation of bus stand on northbound side (towards the city centre)

On the north side of Stockport Road, the bus stand will be moved to accommodate the additional lane.

Relocation of bus stand on southbound side (away from the city centre)

On the south side of Stockport Road, the bus stand will be moved to accommodate the new crossing.

Potential tree removal

The land needed to complete the lay-by or bus lane has shrubs and trees on it. We will make every effort to keep the trees close to the Health Centre. If we can't do this, the trees will be removed, but we will ensure that a new tree is planted for each one removed.

Street lighting

The lighting columns will be moved to suit the new kerb line.
