Consultations and surveys Deansgate consultation

This consultation is now closed.

This is the latest phase of consultation for walking and cycling improvements in the Deansgate area.

Last year, we consulted with you on a proposed experimental scheme to close part of Deansgate to all traffic between Blackfriars Street and King Street West.

We have seen strong support through the consultation for reducing traffic on Deansgate however, while our aim is still to reduce traffic in the city centre, we also need to maintain public transport infrastructure. Therefore, we have agreed to keep access for buses and taxis one way along Deansgate in a southbound direction, in line with the city centre transport strategy.

After overwhelming support for the temporary changes, we are now proposing a permanent scheme, which shows our commitment to delivering a better city by reducing traffic volumes and improving conditions for all users.

These proposals reflect changes which we can make within current funding. However, we have aspirations longer term to secure additional funding to allow a transformation of the look and feel of this part of the city centre.

Benefits of the scheme

The proposal to remove most vehicular traffic from Deansgate is to encourage walking and cycling in the area, and to:

  • Improve air quality – Deansgate is it at risk of exceeding acceptable levels for nitrogen dioxide by the end of 2021 unless action is taken. The proposed closure will support our commitment to become zero carbon by 2038 or earlier.
  • Improve road safety - especially for pedestrians and cyclists, also making Deansgate more pleasant and easier for pedestrians to get around.
  • Support the aims of the 2040 Transport Strategy for Manchester - including promoting walking and cycling for local journeys and reducing collisions

There will be no loss of disabled parking as a result of this scheme, and we are committed to making this area fully accessible and user friendly to everybody.
