Charlotte McCue, Living Streets:

So we’ve been working with Broad Oak Primary School, and this is actually their local tennis club. Often schools can make these arrangements with businesses, supermarkets - places that have car parks that aren’t always used at school peak times - and they may be willing to let parents park up, so that then allows them to walk in to school from a location that’s quite close by, but without causing chaos and congestion and traffic around the school.

Sarah (parent): It goes down the back path and its safer away from the cars and traffic, because we get a lot of traffic near the school junction - everyone’s obviously trying to come in and out - and it can be quite chaotic.

Kevin Corteen, Headteacher:
And so when we started working with Living Streets, the way that we looked to develop it was to involve school staff, to buy the tabards that you’ll see the children and staff wearing, just to make it a bit more high-profile. By getting the staff involved we’ve been able to really sell it to parents. We do like parents to get involved, but there’s also the option for parents to drop their children off there, to be registered and left safely with school staff who can then bring them safely down to school. And it does help a little bit with congestion along Broad Oak Lane coming up to the school, and also it’s a bit ‘win win’ because for parents who need to get to work quickly it provides that facility for them.

Charlotte McCue:
Traffic and congestion is a really big issue around schools and 23% of all peak time traffic is those on their journey to schools, so if we can tackle and try and get more people walking to school we’re going to have an impact on the amount of traffic on the streets at peak time.

Kevin Corteen:
The benefits are obvious:- it’s safer for children, it’s ensuring that children are arriving on time at school, and so it’s a worthwhile investment really, and I would encourage everyone to look at their local routes and see if they’ve got opportunities like ours that they could draw on and just reduce congestion outside schools, because I think it is a massive issue for most schools.
