Non-conformists

Nonconformists are Christians who do not conform to the established church.

Online

  • BMD Registers is a searchable online service of early (pre 1837) non-conformist birth, marriage and death registers held at the National Archives
  • Many non-conformist (Methodist, Baptist, Quaker and Presbyterian) registers of baptisms (1500s to 1915), marriages (1500s to 1930) and burials (1500s to 1985) from Greater Manchester are also on Ancestry. Access is free from any of our libraries.

At the Central library you will find:

  • Baptist, Congregational (now United Reformed), Presbyterian, Unitarian and Jewish records for our city. We also have Methodist records for chapels in the Manchester and Stockport Methodist District, which includes parts of Bury, Oldham, Salford, Tameside and Trafford metropolitan districts. These registers are available at Central Library. Records of Stockport chapels are at Stockport library.
  • Quaker records for Hardshaw East Monthly Meeting and the former Hardshaw Monthly Meeting. Some registers are on microfilm.
