Cllr Stogia explains why Manchester supports Fairtrade

I just want to briefly explain why Manchester has supported Fairtrade over many years – and why we'll be renewing our commitment in this year's Fairtrade Fortnight starting Monday the 25th of February.

Fairtrade supports the poorest producers in developing countries. And Fairtrade Fortnight celebrates the difference we can make to struggling lives and communities by choosing Fairtrade's healthy, tasty, sustainable and ethical food and products.

It makes absolute sense that a city like Manchester – as we grow into a global city by including every resident in our success – should stay true to the values we practise locally. We're proud, for example, that here at home we support the Manchester Living Wage for those providing social care for our residents.

So why wouldn't we extend this, when we're buying goods that aren't produced locally, by using our influence on the global stage – to promote Fairtrade's efforts? Let's support the world's poorest people to control their own futures and have the dignified life everyone deserves, at home and abroad.
