Benefits and support Housing Benefit and Universal Credit information for landlords

Universal Credit

Most tenants on a low income or not working, claim help with rent from Universal Credit. It usually goes to the tenant and it’s their responsibility to pay their rent themselves. How much they get is calculated monthly and depends on individual circumstances.

Contact DWP if you need advice: More information about Universal Credit

Housing Benefit

Some tenants still need to get help with rent from Housing Benefit which is managed by the Council.

We aim to deal with claims within four weeks. Incorrect details or missing supporting evidence cause delays.

There is free internet access across Manchester where tenants can claim online.

If you help tenants to claim you must have the tenant with you - you cannot claim on their behalf.
