Benefits of breastfeeding

Major organisations, such as Unicef and the World Health Organisation, agree that breastfeeding is of huge benefit to babies and mothers. Breastfeeding has some of the most wide-reaching and long-lasting effects on the baby's health and development.

Breastmilk protects babies from infections and diseases and reduces mother's risk of breast and ovarian cancers, cardiovascular disease and obesity. Breastfeeding therefore contributes to significant savings to the NHS.  Breatfeeding is also better for the environment.

Despite this, the UK has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world and we are working to change this.
