Apply online to appoint a proxy vote:

You can apply online to appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf at your designated polling station. You must first be registered to vote and have asked have the permission of the person you want to appoint as your proxy. That person must also be registered to vote in the UK.

The number of people a person can act as proxy for is now limited to four (no more than two domestic electors and two overseas electors).

If you want to appoint a temporary proxy to vote on your behalf in a specific election, are an overseas voter or a service voter, you can do so online using the following link (applications to appoint a permanent proxy must be made on a paper form. Keep reading for more detail on paper applications.)

As with registering to vote, we'll need to confirm your identity before we can process your postal vote application. You will need this information to complete the application:

  • the address where you are registered to vote
  • your National Insurance number or other identity documents, for example a passport
  • the specific date of the election or referendum you want to make a postal vote, if you only want a one-off postal vote

You’ll also need to upload a photo of your handwritten signature in black ink on plain white paper.

You must complete the correct form when applying to vote by proxy; some of the reasons to appoint a proxy may need to be supported in your application, so it is important that you read all of the application form to ensure that it is completed correctly.

Deadline for proxy applications:

The deadline for applications to vote by proxy is by 5pm, six working days before polling day. Postal proxy votes will need to be received at least a week before that.
