Roads and transport Great Ancoats Street improvement scheme

Overview

The improved Great Ancoats street is now open. All crossings are active, all tree planting on the main area is complete (with some further planting to be completed on Pin Mill Brow), and we expect to see them start to fill out over the coming year.

The street is now an extension of its surrounding neighbourhoods of the Northern Quarter, Ancoats and New Islington, and will benefit from the same exciting developments to housing and businesses.

The new scheme brings many benefits, including:

  • Safer crossings from the city centre to the surrounding neighbourhoods
  • A greener, more pleasant environment
  • A quieter street for residents and pedestrians
  • Increase economic growth in and around the city centre.

This was achieved by:

  • Installation of 36 new or upgraded, fit-for-purpose crossing points to accommodate both pedestrians and people on bikes (22 controlled crossings and 14 uncontrolled crossings). This is vitally important, and on a typical weekday, Great Ancoats sees over 15,000 crossings
  • Landscaping of the area with the planting of 71 trees, split amongst four beautiful and unique types - Tulip Tree, Green Pillar, Regal Prince, and Japanese Flowering Cherry. These were selected as an excellent fit for the street environment, with the right characteristics to thrive in an urban environment (63 trees on Great Ancoats, with a further 8 trees on Pin Mill Brow)
  • Wider footways with less street furniture clutter
  • New, modern road surface that reduces the noise from motor vehicles by 40 percent
  • As employment is predicted to grow, people will need homes near to their places of work. These improvements will support the continuous success and growth of the area as a popular place to live and work
