Getting support

Talk to your neighbours

  • Talk to some of your neighbours to see if they are interested. They may have had the same idea themselves but not got around to it yet. Ask them to get involved.
  • Set up an informal meeting. This is an opportunity to share ideas and decide who is willing to volunteer and help out.
  • In your meeting, or soon after, you should decide when you want to hold your session and which street - or part of the street - you want to close.
  • There are some streets that are not suitable for closure. For example, if they are on a busy road, a bus route, or have lots of shops and businesses which rely on passing custom and deliveries.
  • If there is a school on your street try to get them involved. Lots of schools have held successful “School Streets” sessions across Manchester.
  • If your street is not suitable you may want to consider a different street nearby and get together with those residents.

Apply to MCC for support, advice and permission

  • Allow at least 3 weeks for the application to be considered, which will allow you time to plan and prepare, recruit residents and volunteers and think about what equipment you will need.
  • Complete your Street Closure application
  • Your Neighbourhood team will have a look at your application and contact you to provide further advice and support. You may be asked to look for diversion routes if they are needed while your road is closed.
  • Your Neighbourhood team can also provide you with details of your local Police Officer and Community Support Officer who can also support your event.
  • It is important that you receive your Legal Community Street Closure Order from us before the event can go ahead. You can receive this by email or post.
