How we manage roads during winter

When we get long periods of snow and ice, our priorities will be influenced by local councillors, but the main aim is to help people to go about their daily lives as normally as possible.

Our work could include things like clearing the roads or pavements, or gritting. But Manchester’s communities are vital at times like these, to help vulnerable neighbours with supplies, shopping or putting their bins out.

There are no specific laws that would penalise you for clearing snow and ice on the pavements outside your property, pathways to your property or public spaces. If an accident did happen, you’re very unlikely to be sued as long as you had not made the pavement or pathway more dangerous than if you’d not cleared it; anyone using areas covered by snow and ice have to be mindful of their own safety.
