Roads and transport Community road safety scheme

We are investing £2 million in road safety, as part of our 5-year Highways Investment Programme with:

  • £1 million for delivering accident reduction schemes in high accident areas;
  • and another £1 million to deliver local community safety schemes in areas where residents, councillors, local police and schools have identified road safety issues.

We have chosen schemes based on a range of factors including traffic volumes, traffic speed, accidents, and other features e.g. nearby bus stops and pedestrian crossings etc.

We are committed to making our roads safer across the city by adding small scale road safety measures to eradicate local problems at each location chosen.

We aim to:

  • increase public safety and reduce the number of accidents
  • reduce traffic speeds
  • increase visibility
  • stop drivers parking where they cause obstructions

We believe that these measures will make our local neighbourhoods much safer environments and reduce the likelihood of accidents. They sit alongside our existing School Improvement programme, and other major projects aimed at improving safety for road users, pedestrians and cyclists.

Where improvements are being made we are communicating with local residents in a range of ways to let them know about the works, including letters, social media and plans in local public buildings.

We plan to complete the improvements by Spring 2022.
