Manchester Register Office

Following Government advice on COVID-19, and to ensure the health and safety of all customers and staff, Manchester Registration Service is currently only offering the following very limited service:

  • Manchester Register Office is closed to the public unless they have a booked appointment or ceremony. There are strict restrictions on who can attend an appointment or ceremony. 

NHS Test and Trace

When visiting the registrars office, you will be asked to give your name and a contact number. In line with Government guidance we will collect this information, to assist with the control of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Where a group of mourners are attending a funeral, the details of the lead funeral applicant will be used for this purpose.

This information will be shared with NHS Test and Trace where requested, to identify people who may have been exposed to the virus.

Death Registrations 

  • All death/still birth registrations will be done by telephone. If a family member is unable to register the death over the telephone they can appoint their funeral director to register the death instead, although it is generally preferable if a family member does register the death. If the family's appointed funeral director is to register the death they must be able to provide all of the personal details, relating to the deceased, required for the registration. To arrange for a registrar to call you back to complete a death/stillbirth registration please send an email to registeroffice@manchester.gov.uk and include your name, contact telephone number, the name of the deceased, and the date and place of death.  If you do not have access to email please ask your funeral director to do this on your behalf. 

To help to make sure that you have all the required information available when the registrar phones you, and to help the registrar make sure that the details are recorded accurately, it would be very helpful if you download and complete the Information form and have it ready for the registrar when they phone. However, this is not essential and you will still be able to complete the registration without it. 

  • If you need to organise a burial within 24 hours of death, there is a registrar available on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, between 10am and 2.30pm.  Please send an email to registeroffice@manchester.gov.uk and include your name, contact telephone number, the name of the deceased, and the date and place of death. Add in the subject box URGENT - burial within 24 hours. If you do not have access to email please ask your funeral director to do this on your behalf.

Birth Registrations 

  • Following the announcement of lockdown measures in March birth registration in England and Wales was temporarily suspended. At the start of June it was announced that birth registrations could resume where it is safe to do so. Manchester Register Office will be taking a limited number of bookings to register births at Heron House from 8th June 2020.   • If you are unable to get an appointment straight away, families can now make a claim for child benefit or universal credit prior to the birth being registered, where you have not been able to do so because of the pandemic. Please visit www.gov.uk for further information. 

Copy Certificates

  •  We have reintroduced  the copy certificate service for applications made online and through the post. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic we have limited capacity to process applications and it may take longer for you to receive your certificates. Please only apply for certificates if you cannot wait until the current restrictions are over.

Please note that the service to purchase historic / family history certificates (birth certificates before 1920; death certificates and marriage certificates before 1945) from the Library is not available. If you submit an application for one of these certificates it will not be processed at this time.

Marriage and Civil Partnership Ceremonies

  • From 4 July religious and civil marriage ceremonies and civil partnership formations will be allowed to begin in England if certain conditions around social distancing are met. 

  • The Prime Minister announced that up to 30 people would be able to attend ceremonies, provided the venue is Covid Secure and social distancing requirements are met. Each venue is required to complete a health and safety risk assessment to determine the maximum number of people that can safely attend in that venue. Unfortunately, due to ventilation issues in our ceremonies suite, the maximum number of people able to attend a marriage or civil partnership at Heron House is 8: the couple and up to 6 guests.

  • From Monday 13 July we will be able to take new bookings for ceremonies at the Pankhurst Suite, or for a registrar to attend a ceremony at one of our approved premises.

  • We are currently only taking notices of marriage and civil partnerships for couples where it is date critical.  If you have booked your ceremony and you need to give notice as a matter of urgency please contact the office by email registeroffice@manchester.gov.uk stating both your names, the date and the place of your ceremony and a contact telephone number, if you meet the criteria for an emergency appointment a member of staff will contact you to discuss.

Renewal of Vows and Naming Ceremonies

Until further notice all renewal of vows and naming ceremonies are suspended.  We are in the process of contacting customers who already have a booking to arrange a full refund.  We are doing this in date order, so please be patient.  At this time no new bookings will be made.

Corrections 

  • Corrections to death registrations may be considered if failure to do so is likely to delay a funeral.

Citizenship Ceremonies 

  • For Citizenship ceremonies, customers would normally be expected to book their ceremony within three months of being sent an invitation from the Home Office. Due to the current pandemic circumstances UKVI have extended this period to six months and will keep this under constant review. Customers should be advised that no adverse decisions will be made on applications because of delays caused by Coronavirus.
  • From Monday 20 July 2020, we will be able to offer some Private Citizenship Ceremonies.  For further information or to make a booking please email registeroffice@manchester.gov.uk and include your name, home office reference number (if known) and a contact number.
