COVID-19 COVID-19 bins, rubbish and recycling

Why services can be affected

Bin collections

Due to the impact of COVID-19 it may not be possible to complete all bin collections on the usual days, for reasons such as:

  • More rubbish and recycling at home. Since lockdown began in March 2020, most households have been at home more of the time, so have produced more rubbish and recycling than usual. Across the city, general waste (black and grey bins) was up by 30% during lockdown
  • Staffing. Just like everyone in the UK, our frontline bin-crew members can't work if they test positive for COVID-19 or have to self-isolate. When this happens, they can't work for 10-14 days, and - while our contractor will use agency workers to try and cover - if lots of staff are affected at the same time, it may not be possible to get enough temporary staff
  • Collection routes. The way our collection routes are planned means that homes at the end of the route are more likely to be affected if there are issues. We're sorry but it's not possible to reorganise them: so many factors have to be taken into account such as school drop off times, busy commuter periods and the location of the tips where collections are taken.

Check what to do if your bin collection is missed.

Large item collections

Demand for collections of large items has also been higher than normal, probably due to lots of us using lockdown time to improve or reorganise our homes. You can take large items to your nearest tip; they're open seven days a week. Find your nearest tip.

Or you can book a large item collection.

New bin orders

Requests for new bins have doubled recently - it could be due to the larger amounts of waste and recycling. Additional orders have already been placed but production and delivery takes a minimum of eight weeks so there'll be a delay, and we have temporarily stopped taking orders for blue, brown or green bins to avoid a backlog.

If you need a grey/black general waste bin, we will give you rubbish sacks until those bins are back in stock. Place an order for sacks. Simply put the full sacks out on collection day as you would normally do with your bin.

Please squash / flatten your recycling as much as possible - cardboard and plastic bottles etc - to fit more in your bins. Your recycling can also be taken to a tip if you wish. Find your nearest tip.
