Smithfield conservation area has a limited number of trees growing within its boundaries. The greatest concentration occurs around the housing now occupying the south-east third of the old covered market site.
Planting could be provided on other sites if only on a temporary basis, for instance on the periphery of sites used for parking, at least until those sites are re-developed. Trees can also provide an impression of solidity in spaces once occupied by buildings.
Anyone wishing to fell, prune or uproot a tree covered by a Tree Preservation Order or in a Conservation Area should seek permission first from us before undertaking any work to the tree.
