Control of development

Development control in Old Broadway is aimed at encouraging development which ensures the continued prosperity of the area whilst paying attention to its special architectural and visual qualities.

The planning committee can take out additional powers to control minor matters such as the colour and design of window frames, but in this case it is felt that the character of existing elements is so strong that this is unnecessary. Instead, owners of property in the avenue are encouraged to retain the original character and detail of their houses.

Substantial development proposals will require planning permission, and some minor works may also require the prior approval of the City Council. The South Area Team will be willing to give advice on such matters. Such advice should be sought at an early stage.

In conservation areas the demolition of certain buildings requires specific permission; once again advice should be sought from the South Area Team.

Trees make a significant contribution to the character of the area, both on the roundabouts and in private gardens. In order to provide a continuous tree cover it is a good management technique to plant replacement trees in anticipation of the removal of problem specimens.

Anyone wishing to fell, prune or uproot a tree covered by a Tree Preservation Order or in a Conservation Area should seek permission first from us before undertaking any work to the tree.
