Control of development

Development control in Chorltonville is aimed at encouraging development which ensures the continued prosperity of the area whilst paying attention to its special architectural and visual qualities.

Manchester City Planning and Highways Committee can use additional powers to control minor matters such as the colour and design of window frames, but in the case of Chorltonville it is felt that the character of existing elements is so strong that this is not normally necessary. Instead, owners of property on the estate are encouraged to retain the original character and detail of their houses.

Substantial development proposals will require planning permission and some minor works may also require the prior approval of the City Council. The South Area team will be willing to give advice on such matters. Advice should be sought at an early stage.

In conservation areas, the demolition of certain buildings requires specific permission; once again advice should be sought from the City Planning Officer.
