Parks, leisure and the arts Wilbraham Road / Edge Lane Conservation Area

Introduction

The junction of Wilbraham Road, a major arterial route within the City of Manchester, and Edge Lane in Chorlton has long been recognised as possessing buildings and spaces of character and quality dating back to the late 19th century. The buildings continue to be complimented by a substantial and mature tree coverage.

Increased development pressure in the late 20th and early 21st century had the potential to destroy the character of the area, thereby contributing to the reduction in the quality of Manchester's suburbs.

The area is located approximately 3 miles south east of the City Centre and is immediately north of the previously designated conservation area of Chorlton Green. They share a common boundary.

Approximately 660 people live in the area in a combination of substantial individual houses, semi-detached villas, terraces and apartments within either converted older properties or purpose-designed contemporary buildings.

There are no dramatic changes in levels throughout the area, although there is a general fall of approximately 3 metres from a high in the north to a low in the south.
