Taxis and private hire Updates for taxi and Private Hire licensing

Vehicle testing

The vehicle testing regime will be kept under constant review as we progress through this unprecedented period. For now, all routine vehicle testing is on hold. At such a time that we resume routine testing of vehicles, we will credit any unused scheduled tests off your next vehicle renewal fee as applicable.

Please note that vehicles may still be required to be tested upon request by an authorised officer. Please note we are able to deliver safe testing of vehicles as necessary at our testing station at Lawton Street, maintaining safe social distancing guidelines, and by strictly limiting potential customer interaction to an absolute maximum of 2.

All proprietors must ensure their vehicles are maintained in line with the current policy, and remain safe and fit to carry members of the public.

Currently suspended vehicles

  • We have been and are continuing to contact proprietors directly to see if they wish to go ahead with a re-test at this stage
  • The usual 14 day deadline for retest will be extended to 31 May 2020 and will be kept under review for proprietors who wish to defer the test
  • Re-tests must be paid for at this stage

Vehicle Licences due to expire before 31 May 2020 – and the renewal application has already been submitted and the fee paid

  • These licences will be automatically renewed for 12 months but we will not require the renewal test
  • We will issue new plates to the next scheduled due test date (i.e. 4 or 6 months)
  • We will contact you individually about how to collect your new plate

Vehicle Licences due to expire before 31 May 2020 – and the renewal application has not yet been submitted and/or the fee not yet paid

  • Please submit your renewal application form (along with any relevant documentation) and we will automatically renew your licence for 12 months
  • We will not require payment of the application fee at this stage – this will be deferred until 31 July 2020 (this will remain under review)
  • We will issue new plates to the next scheduled due test date (i.e. 4 or 6 months)
  • We will contact you individually about how to collect your new plate

New Vehicle Licences (PHVs)

  • Where an application has already been submitted and paid for, we will contact applicants to clarify if they wish to continue with their application at this stage – if so, we are able to arrange for the vehicle to be tested with applicants directly. Please note no new or replacement vehicles will be licensed that have not been seen/tested (as appropriate).
  • Applications that have not yet been paid for will not be processed further at this stage – this decision will remain under continuous review as the situation develops
