Volunteer at Manchester Day – the city’s big day out

Make sure you have a unique Manchester Day experience by being part of the show and take advantage of the volunteer opportunities on offer.

Manchester Day is one of the biggest outdoor events in the UK, with tens of thousands of people filling the streets for the huge celebration, along with this year’s theme: The Word on The Street - designed to celebrate Manchester’s role as a brave and pioneering city for vocal self expression across all cultural platforms.

There are hundreds of opportunities to be part of the event and Manchester Day is looking for enthusiastic people to play a key role in helping to bring the streets of Manchester alive with a spectacle of colour, music and performance.

Opportunities include creative roles both in the run up to Manchester Day and on the day of the event, helping top artists create the incredible costumes, artworks, structures and props that will transform the city centre in June.

Before the day, you can volunteer as much or as little as you like, from a few hours to a few weeks and the experience will give you the opportunity to work with established carnival artists with a hands-on involvement in creating the Manchester Day spectacle.

On the day, volunteers can also help communicating with the Manchester Day crowds, handing out programmes and answering any queries people have about the event.

There are also creative roles on the day playing a vital role in preparing the parade, helping groups with floats and accessories, and directing participants to their positions. You can also be part of the parade itself or help bring the city centre squares alive supporting the performances and installations.

Cllr Pat Karney, Chair of Manchester Day, said: “Manchester Day’s success relies on the passion and enthusiasm of the thousands of people who come together for the weeks leading up to, and on the day of, this huge day of celebration.

“We have volunteers who have been part of the event since the very beginning, but each year our ambition for the event gets bigger and bigger, and it’s fantastic to see new faces get involved.

“This is an opportunity to be part of something amazing – an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life.”

Liz Pugh, Creative Producer of Walk the Plank, said: “Manchester Day simply couldn’t happen without our fantastic army of volunteers who sign up to be part of this amazing feel-good experience.  Whether you’re young or old, or somewhere in between, we want volunteers who can bring their energy and enthusiasm to making yet another Manchester Day an unforgettable day out. Apart from being part of this incredible celebration, it’s a great way to meet new people and make new friends.”

Manchester Day will take place on Sunday, 17 June from midday until 6pm.

The parade begins from Liverpool Road at 1pm.

Manchester Day is created by Manchester People, commissioned by Manchester City Council and produced by Walk the Plank.
