Apply now for September 2019 secondary school places

It might be the summer holidays but parents are urged to turn their thoughts to school now to ensure they don't miss the deadline for applying for their child's secondary school place for next autumn.

Admissions have opened for September 2019 entry to the city’s secondary schools, and parents have until 5 pm on 31 October to make an application.

All parents must apply for a place for their child - a place can't be allocated if an application isn't made.

The easiest way to apply is on-line, and parents of pupils about to start their final year in primary school should by now have received a letter giving them a unique PIN number for their child to speed up the on-line process.

Parents or carers who haven't received a PIN number can still make an on-line application - it just takes a few minutes longer to complete.

Parents are encouraged to list at least three preferences on their application, and to rank their preferred schools to show which of them would be their first, second, or third, preference, if places were available at those schools.

Manchester operates an equal preference system to allocate places. This means each of the school preferences given by a parent on their application form will be considered at the same time.  If the system shows a place could be offered at more than one school, the child will be offered a place at the school ranked highest on the application form.

Parents unable to make an online application can request a paper application form by ringing 0161 245 7166. Postal applications must be returned by the same deadline of 5 pm on 31 October.

Councillor Luthfur Rahman, Executive Member Children's Services, Manchester City Council, said: "Choosing a secondary school for your child is one of the most important decisions parents have to make.

“It might still be the summer holidays, but parents should take some time now to find out more about the schools they're interested in and where they think their child will be happy and achieve their best.

“It’s vital however to apply on time.  Applying late means they have much less chance of getting a place at one of their preferred schools."

On time applicants will receive their offer of a school place on National Offer Day, 1 March 2019.
