Manchester Sport Awards celebrates 10 years of community excellence

Nominations are now opened to celebrate the city’s sporting community at the prestigious annual awards.

For a decade, the Manchester Sport Awards have shone a light on those community champions who have gone the extra mile to deliver sporting excellence, or perhaps to celebrate someone who has had the year of their life on their chosen field.

The award categories include Coach of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year, Changing Lifestyle Recognition Award and the M.E.N. People's Champion.

Stars from Manchester’s sporting scene – including GB Olympians Katharine Merry and Jenny Meadows – will present awards at the ceremony at the Hilton Hotel, Deansgate on Saturday 27 October to a crowd of more than 400 people.

A highlight of this year’s awards night will see the trophies won by Manchester’s sports clubs – including the Premier League Trophy and the Carabao Cup – paraded through the venue as part of an extravagant opening ceremony.

It’s now time for you to nominate your local sporting hero and honour their effort to make a difference in Manchester – keeping people active and healthy.

Cllr Luthfur Rahman, Manchester City Council’s executive member for culture and leisure, said: “For a decade the Manchester Sports Awards have picked out those incredible people who consistently go above and beyond to sports across the city.

“These are the people who work tirelessly for local team and clubs without need for recognition, but this is our chance to show them how much their effort is appreciated.

“Let us know about that football coach or running partner or that incredible volunteer that makes Manchester one of the best places in the UK to play sports. If you think they deserve to be know, give them a nomination and tell us why.”

Nicola Stockdale, Young Volunteer of the Year in 2016, said: "Winning a Manchester Sports Award two years ago was a nice surprise and the evening itself was an amazing occasion.  I volunteer regularly at Debdale Outdoor Centre alongside my work, and am Vice Chairperson of the Junior Outdoor Activity Club where I am able to introduce more new people to the sport of sailing.  Nominating someone for a Manchester Sports Award is a great way to say thank you to people who are passionate about sport in Manchester."

Sponsors of the awards include: Manchester Evening News, Manchester Airport Group, Wythenshawe Forum Trust and Slaters Menswear.
