Giant Santa returns for his final year in Albert Square

Manchester's biggest festive red resident has arrived in Albert Square for what could be his final appearance on his perch in front of Town Hall.

His eleventh year in the city, the six-tonne Santa behemoth has become an icon of the city’s festive season and is the latest in a long line of over-sized St Nicks scaling Manchester City Council’s clock tower.

However, during the Town Hall’s refurbishment it will likely be necessary to find Santa a new home if he is to stay in the city.

Never out of site during the festive season, Manchester’s giant Santa is lit by 100,000 low energy LED lights, but his huge size and weight means his location needs careful planning. The City Council are currently investigating alternative locations for the city’s favourite festive mascot.

As a thoroughly modern Santa, he will be back on twitter this year wading into all of the Christmas conversation. Follow him @MCRSanta and keep up with all the festive news.

Santa will arrive in Albert Square this week and will be lifted into place this coming Wednesday (31 October), but his dazzling lights will remain off until the official start to the festive season at the Manchester Christmas Lights Switch-on event on Saturday, 3 November.

Cllr Pat Karney, Manchester’s Christmas spokesperson, said: “I can’t wait to see the big man again, but it is true, our much-loved Santa may be evicted from Town Hall after 11 iconic years in Albert Square. We’re open to suggestions about where we could put him. Make sure you come and say hello this Christmas – maybe for the last time!”

Cllr Luthfur Rahman, Manchester City Council’s executive member for culture and leisure, said: “Manchester people have grown up loving their generation’s giant Santa and every year we all look forward to seeing him return. Make sure you follow him on twitter for his peculiar look at the festive season.”
