Hats entertainment is 10 out of 10 for Manchester Day

Make your very own hat for Manchester’s big day out and join in the People’s Procession

Volunteers and artists have been busy behind the scenes getting ready for this year’s Manchester Day, which returns for its tenth outing on Sunday 23 June.

The huge, free celebration of the city – for the people, by its people – has grown to be one of the biggest events in the region’s calendar, this year celebrating the theme: 10 out of 10.

With the event less than two weeks away, 'Creation Stations' around the city are opening workshops ahead of the event where people will have the chance to make their own party hat, to be worn during the city-centre Manchester Day celebrations, and take part in a people’s procession leading up to a finale in Cathedral Gardens.

The free workshops will provide a host of environmentally friendly hat-making materials and offer artistic and practical support throughout the creative process – allowing attendees the opportunity to design the perfect accouterment to cap off their preparations for the big day.

For those unable to visit the workshops ahead of the event, there will be a chance to get arty and craft their own celebratory headgear at The Creation Station in St Ann’s Square on Manchester Day. Parading experts will be on hand – from noon until 5pm – to show attendees how best to flaunt their fabulous creations.

Then, at 5pm, everyone is invited to join the ‘People’s Procession’ – a promenade through the streets to reach the Manchester Day finale in Cathedral Gardens.

The FREE workshops are for all ages with sessions across the city:

Saturday 15 June, 2–3pm

Monday 17 June, 3.30–5pm

Saturday 22 June, 1–3pm

Thursday 20 June, 4–5pm

Tuesday 18 June, 4–5pm

Wednesday 19 June, 3.30–5pm

Saturday 15 June, 2–3pm

Cllr Pat Karney, Chair of Manchester Day, said: "I take my hat off to all the fantastic Mancunians whose creativity and energy makes Manchester Day an extraordinary summertime family fun day out year on year –  and this year’s tenth celebration promises to be even more wondrous.”

“With Manchester Day just around the corner it’s time to get your party hats on in readiness for this year’s colossal event. So get down to your nearest Creation Station, top off your glad rags with your own fabulous creation and strut your stuff at this year’s unmissable celebration of the city.”

Sustainability has always been at the heart of the Manchester Day creative process and green issues have been a common theme running through the artworks through the years.  Manchester Day was awarded a Creative Green certificate in 2017 and is working towards a repeat award this year.

Manchester Day is created by Manchester People, commissioned by Manchester City Council and produced by Walk the Plank.
