HS2 statement from Council Leader Sir Richard Leese

Statement from Sir Richard Leese following a meeting with Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps MP today to discuss HS2 (Weds 12 Feb)

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: "Meeting the Secretary of State for Transport today, Grant Shapps has given a categorical confirmation that phase 2B of HS2 will definitely go ahead, without the need for further review of the project and to an accelerated project timeline.

"Importantly, we share an understanding that a fully integrated rail system that connects HS2 to the east-west Northern Powerhouse Rail - or High Speed North - is the only way we can truly rebalance the country's economy towards the North. The focus now should be to get on with it and realise the benefits of this project as quickly as possible."
