Celebration of imaginative writing featuring leading authors and cultural icons from across the world.
The 14th edition of the Manchester Literature Festival features extraordinary storytellers, poets, musicians, feminists and thinkers from across the globe.
Fiction and World Literature strands include five novelists in the running for the 2019 Booker Prize alongside other ground-breaking authors.
Incredible young poets give us a taster of their new collections alongside poetry champions. Gillian Slovo delivers the annual Castlefield Manchester Sermon on democracy, and Inua Ellams (Barbershop Chronicles), Isaiah Hull and Hafsah Aneela Bashir perform New Commissions written especially for the Festival.
MLF's new Culture strand encompasses art, biography, climate change, music, medicine, politics and protest. Stephen Morris and Jon Savage celebrate the music of Joy Division and New Order, and songwriters Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys) and Guy Garvey (Elbow) discuss creativity, music and place with poets Andrew McMillan and Simon Armitage. Suede singer Brett Anderson returns to talk about his new memoir, Afternoons With the Blinds Drawn, and we welcome trauma surgeon David Nott, broadcaster Sandi Toksvig and acclaimed Chinese biographer Jung Chang to MLF for special in-conversations.
From punk poets to political activists, you can discover our UNESCO City of Literature through the eyes of our literati on our ever-popular Weightmans Walking Tours.
Treats for Young Readers include an afternoon with bestselling children’s author David Baddiel, and a Family Reading Day where you can sing, paint and play your way through astronaut training with Ready Steady Lift Off!
